Lead Time

The total elapsed time between placing a purchase order with a supplier and receiving the goods or services, including manufacturing, processing, shipping, and inspection time.

Lead time is one of the most critical variables in procurement and supply chain planning. It encompasses the entire order-to-delivery cycle: order processing, manufacturing or preparation, quality inspection, shipping and transit, customs clearance (for international orders), and receiving and inspection at the buyer's site.

Understanding and managing lead times is essential for inventory planning, production scheduling, and supplier selection. Long or unpredictable lead times force organizations to hold more safety stock, increasing working capital requirements. Procurement teams actively negotiate lead time reduction and monitor actual vs. quoted lead times as a key supplier performance metric.

Practical impact: A retailer sourcing fashion apparel from Southeast Asia faces 8-12 week lead times. By switching 30% of volume to a nearshore supplier in Turkey with 3-week lead times, they reduce inventory holding by 40% and improve their ability to respond to trend changes — despite paying 15% more per unit.
